What has racing done for me? Have you ever met the disgruntled drag racer? The guy that’s never happy. I run across them from time to time but never understand why they are so bitter. Personally, I love a day at the racetrack. I love the cars, and the competition, but mostly I appreciate the racers. I really feel that the Drag racers that you meet at the track are the best folks around. However, the other day I was talking to a guy and he asked the question “What has Drag racing ever done for me?” It’s an interesting question because it implies that drag racing should do something for a person. I responded with the question, “What have you done for Drag Racing lately?” Sure, we all love Drag Racing, but maybe we could do a little more to keep it healthy. Have you brought friends or neighbors to the track and introduced them to our sport? Or have you taken your racecar to a car show or charity function to inspire people to come to a race? I think it’s important to bring fresh faces to the track and let them see how cool Drag Racing is. Especially kids, we need to plant the love of Drag Racing in their hearts early and let it get a good grip. This is where all the future Drag racers come from. I took a car to a Cub Scout pine wood derby this year, handed out stickers, and let the kids take turns sitting in the car. One kid stood off to the side and stared at the car with eyes as wide as saucers. He wanted to know what it was like to be in the car when I made a pass. I told him it was like the best ride at Disneyland, times 10. The look on his face told me he was hooked for life. I’m sure that someday I will see him at a Super Chevy Show with his own car. So when people ask me what Drag Racing has done for me, I tell them that it has provided a lifetime passion with the most wonderful people on the planet. For me, it’s enough!
